Let the countdown begin!

Well it’s actually already begun. A few weeks ago I spent a day photographing a variety of subjects to help Ronald McDonald Charities of Chicago/Northern Indiana countdown the final 86 days (there are 86 rooms in the new House) leading up to the opening of the world’s largest Ronald McDonald House.

Today the countdown features 6 year old House guest Ethan, who flew all the way from Alaska to stay in the House. some things change, some things stay the same

For the past two years, I’ve produced individual portraits of our two boys, Jack & Conner, as well as portraits of their twin cousins, Ally & Gracie, and oldest cousin Anthony. I’ve stuck with the same, simple lighting setup and black/white treatment each year. And despite the inherent frustration involved with working with 5 kids under the age of 6, it’s a session that I’ve started to look forward to every year. Ironically it’s not the anticipation of seeing what types of looks or reactions I’ll get from the kids each year that increases my anticipation. What I look forward to is finishing the current year’s images, and then viewing them alongside the portraits from the prior years.

Meghan, Greg, Cate & Charlie

It’s been a few years since I last worked with Meghan and her daughter Cate, and this was actually the first time I was able to work with Cate’s little brother, Charlie. Luckily Cate has done a good job showing Charlie the ropes when it comes to making great pictures!

OK so most of you know I don’t have a daughter, we have two sons, but as a parent I can’t think of a better photograph to have on the walls of my office than the one above….hope you have some empty wall-space Greg!

Since I’m always been accused of being the “Cobbler who’s children have no shoes” I put my in-house family “models” to work this week for some fall childresn portraits of my kids, nephew and twin nieces.

I photographed Jessica’s wedding last fall and now that she’s done with the whirlwind of wedding planning, she’s started a business making custom tutus for little girl princesses. Her tutus and headbands are all custom designed, and are perfect for the parent of a little girl who likes to play dress-up or ballerina! Also, if you’re a photographer who specializes in small children’s photography and like to incorporate props into your session, these can be a great way to add some color and flair to your images! When Jess said she needed some fresh photographs for her portfolio, finding two models wasn’t all that difficult….all I had to do was bribe my twin nieces with a free tutu and they were good to go!

Last year we made these low key, black & white portraits of Jack, Conner, Anthony, Grace, and Ally for their Grandmother’s birthday. She liked them so much, that we had to extend the offer to update the portraits for her birthday every year! Here is this year’s edition of the set!

Although he doesn’t know it, Conner is going to be the real “winner” out of this series because the first version, last year, he was only a few months old. So now he’ll have a complete set of portraits made on an annual basis, all done in the same style as well. I wish I could say that for the other kids, but the portraits that mark different points in their lives up to this point all look a bit different with different lighting, background and style choices.

Shikha & Manmeet – Engagement “teaser”

Shikha & Manmeet are getting married this summer, and despite the brutal weather and the fact that they are both in the middle of their medical residencies in different states (Georgia and Massachusetts), they were able to find the time to hop on a plane and make it in for their engagement photographs this past weekend. There’s more to come, but I wanted to post one of my favorites from the first part of their session…..
