I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway……

One of the labs that I use for my printing, ColorInc Pro Lab maintains a page on Facebook where they post their favorite image each day from the thousands of photographs that come through their lab for printing.

This photograph from Christine & Greg’s wedding last year was picked last week as their photo of the day!

8x12 2 blog Chicago Wedding Photography Picture of the Day!Considering the number of images, and the quality of some of the other photographers I know who use ColorInc…..this was definitely a cool surprise to see this photograph pop up on their list of daily favorites!  If you’d like to see more of their daily favorites, CLICK HERE I’m not sure if you have to have a facebook account or not though, but you can also see the list of their daily favorites (and more about Color Inc) on their blog by CLICKING HERE!

So yesterday’s post about photojournalism prompted a bunch of people to ask what my take on photojournalism really is. So here ya go:

I think photojournalism, or “PJ,” as it applies to weddings is an incredibly over-used and mis-used term, simply due to the fact that everyone has their own definition about what constitutes a PJ photographer.

When you hear the term “photojournalist,” most people immediately think of war photographers, or news photographers covering policital events and breaking news, as it happens. These photographers shoot everything as it happens, do not ask anyone to pose for a picture, and are ethically bound not to enhance their images with any type of image editing software. Over the past 10 years brides have wanted to include this type of photography in their wedding coverage, emphasizing black and white images, and a lack of “posed” pictures.  The trend is analogous to the rise in “reality” everything…people don’t want things that look fake or contrived.  Rather, they want everything to be real and in the moment.

Does that make me a photojournalist?:  In the strictest definition of the term, no.  However, do I consider how I photograph a wedding to be photojournalistic?:  Absolutely.  This is the difference between what some might call “pure PJ” and “wedding PJ.”  In a perfect world, I would never have to pose, setup, or influence any photograph that I make at a wedding.  I wouldn’t have to bother the bride and groom, and wouldn’t have concern myself about whether a particular wedding photograph is “real” or natural enough or not.  However not every wedding, and not every wedding couple is the same.  Moreover, I’m not enough of a pure photojournalist to record images that properly document the emotions and story of the day to my standards in a completely 100% unobtrusive fashion. This is where my definition of wedding PJ may differ from others.

Wedding PJ is a visual style, not a particular method of creating photographs.  Brides that commission me to photograph their weddings are relying on me to tell the story of their wedding day through my photographs, regardless of how those photographs are created.  As I mentioned before, if I can do this in a completely unobtrusive manner, all the better.  However, I’m not above posing, arranging, and influencing a shot in order to fully illustrate or draw out the moments and emotions of the day.

Here’s a few examples from the past few wedding seasons that show what my approach to what “wedding photojournalism” entails:

IMG 0630 8x12 Chicago Wedding Photojournalism my definition.....Every bride that sees this photograph from Allie & Josh’s wedding immediately says “that’s what I want, totally natural pictures!”  What they don’t know is this image was made while waiting for a couple of additional bridesmaids to arrive for their formal portraits.  If it wasn’t for the formals being scheduled….this image doesn’t happen at all because how often to all the bridesmaids just happen to be standing right behind the bride?

IMG 5797blog 1 Chicago Wedding Photojournalism my definition.....This one from Kacie & Shane’s wedding is about as close as I’m able enough to get to “pure PJ.”  Shane was really nervous prior to their ceremony, and his Dad came over to give him a few words of encouragement.  No prompting, no influence from me at all.  In face after Shane saw me over in the corner, he blurted out “please tell me you didn’t just shoot that!”

IMG 7497 1 Chicago Wedding Photojournalism my definition.....Another “pure PJ” moment of the florist decorating the ceremony site prior to Erin & Brad’s ceremony at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles.  As much as I might have wanted to ask the florist to spread a few more petals….I just let it go and the picture stands on its own.

IMG 6103 1 Chicago Wedding Photojournalism my definition.....So I’ll admit that I completely set up and posed William & Jen on a bench for this one.  Does it fall into my definition of wedding PJ….sure does!  It’s posed, it’s influenced (I had to move a few pieces of furniture and a few lamps around to get it the way I wanted), but after a few minutes William whispered something in Jen’s ears and they both just cracked up.  So while the setup is influenced, the reaction is completely natural.  This photograph won’t win any photojournalism awards, but it was one of the client’s favorite images from their wedding, and became the cover of their wedding album.  At the end of the day, when they looked back on their wedding photographs, this was the one image that defined and illustrated how they felt about each other on the day.  Do you think they really cared that I set it up?

IMG 9501 forsite 1 Chicago Wedding Photojournalism my definition.....This photograph from Emily and Danny’s wedding last year is another good example of what I’d call wedding PJ.  While taking a “standard” portrait on the railing, Emily decided she was done with her veil and in one quick movement removed it and gave it a quick toss.  Again it’s a setup shot, but the resulting image tells the story of the type of bride Emily was, and this image instantly became one of their favorites once they saw their proofs!

So at the end of the day, it really makes no difference to me whether a photographer poses their subjects, doesn’t pose their subjects, or operates somewhere in between.  The important factor is do the resulting images fully tell the story of the wedding day and illustrate the connections between tbe bride & groom, their friends, and their families.

Brides today all want “photojournalistic” wedding coverage.  However if you ask 10 different wedding photographers what “photojournalism”, or “wedding photojounalism” means, you’ll probably get 10 different answers.

To me here’s what photojournalism is in its purest form:  Using pictures to tell a story in the hopes of effecting some level of change.  CNN ran the story of a Turkish taxi driver is using his camera (a simple point and shoot no-less) to document the increasing level of poverty with the hopes that his images will lead to some real acknowledgement of the situation, and eventually some change.

Oh, and if you want my take on what “wedding photojournalism” means, you’ll have to check back another day for that one icon wink Photojournalism that REALLY tells a story

Three weeks after Glenn & Charlie’s wedding at Chicago’s Swissotel, I was back at the Swissotel for Vijay and Shiraz’s wedding day ceremony and wedding celebration.  This was the 2nd Hindu wedding ceremony I was able to photograph this season, the first being Shika & Shridar back in May.  Here’s a selection of the photographs that I took over the past weekend!

For those of you who know the entire arc of my photo career know that I started out shooting college and professional sports, as well as editorial news coverage.  This was many moons ago when the cameras actually used something called film, and photoshop was something that graphic geeks played around with in window-less rooms.  As much as I loved the intensity and fast pace of shooting sports, one thing that always aggravated me was the amount of secrecy and paranoia among a lot of my “colleagues.”  I always felt that it was very rare for photographers to share information, tips, strategies, etc.  Maybe if you were in a pinch someone would lend you a battery or an extra roll of film, but that’s about where it ended.

Fast forward a few years and I find myself shooting weddings and portraits, and the degree to which the wedding photographer community embraces information sharing and collegiality is absolutely amazing!  My only guess is that unlike editorial work where everyone is angling for the same jobs, there are more than enough weddings to go around for everyone in a given market, and not everyone has the same target market, which leads to more information exchange.   Recently I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop and community of other wedding photographers from across the country, all of whom are worth a mention here:

  • Lawrence Chan, blogger and SEO guru….’nuff said
  • Kenny Kim, if you don’t know who he is, crawl away from your computer and out of your basement, you’ll probably run into him…..
  • Otto Rascon, not only an awesome photographer, but a killer graphic designer too!
  • Kameron Olds, his site is called Shooting Galery Photo, but there’s nothing about guns here
  • Molly Michel, she just tells people to do the things they already want to do, and then “click” like magic there it is! (her words not mine, but I liked it!)
  • Peter Garr, one more in a long like of awesome California photographers…..P.S. I HATE the fact that you guys have pefect weather all the time!
  • Kara Schultz another Chicago photographer from the NW burbs like me….if you don’t book me…book her!
  • Bob and Dawn Davis Bob and Dawn are more widely known for shooting destination and celebrity weddings.  The funny thing is Bob and I used to roam the same sidelines of the same games back when he was working for the Chicago Sun Times, we just didn’t know each other back then!
  • Kenny Nakai made me feel like a fat, disgusting slob by telling me he only goes to the artery clogging Paradise Pup no more than once a year…..I just can’t seem to resist it’s greasy magnetic pull….mmmmmmm
Eclipse Photography So when I met Molly I thought “oh cool, someone from out of town, came a long way, very awesome”….but then I realize the Eclipse guys are from Toronto!  Go Maple Leafs…..
  • Jules Weigand Fantastic blogger and photographer from Louisville!
  • Ray Pryor a pretty wicked combination of photo and video production!

These other photographers are all from California, and although they are all really cool people, I secretly hate them because they get to shoot weddings in vineyards, beaches, and wineries, and area all super skinny and healthy looking.

It was great to meet everyone, can’t wait to keep exchanging ideas and finding inspiration from each and every one of you!

006 Chicago Childrens Portrait Photography Ally & GraceIt’s amazing how fast the first year goes by.  Yesterday I needed to take a few portrait photographs of my 9 month old twin nieces Ally and Grace.  Since their first birthday is rapidly approaching, I needed the new portraits for their birthday invitation.

002 Chicago Childrens Portrait Photography Ally & Grace004 Chicago Childrens Portrait Photography Ally & Grace005 Chicago Childrens Portrait Photography Ally & GraceAs usual we needed to recruit the twins’ big brother “bugga” to help with getting good smiles!  The worst thing about taking photographs of baby twins is it’s so difficult to get two happy babies at the exact same time.  Luckily each girl cooperated pretty well!

This blog post is brought to you by the letter “C” as in “connections.” Stacie & Mike were married last weekend, and what made this one so much fun for me to photograph was the fact that I kept stumbling into people/things that connect back to other things in my life.

Starting off, Mike is Stevan’s brother, who’s wedding I photographed back in July, you can see a few of Stevan and Nicole’s pictures HERE So it was cool to be back at Mike & Stevan’s parent’s house for the traditional Serbian Skup pre-wedding party.

I had to put this picture of Mike and his Dad on the blog, because both this past weekend, and at Stevan’s wedding, their parents were some of the most warm and gracious people I’ve ever met.  It’s not that often that a Groom’s Dad is offering me food and (several) drinks within minutes of walking into the house.  They truly made me feel like part of the family at both weddings!

IMG 4261 Chicago Wedding Photography Stacie and MikeWho says that you can’t find wedding photography inspiration from family portraits.  If you remember back to Baby Addison’s newborn pictures a Coors beer keg made a nice prop for Addison’s newborn photographs.  Well since Coors Light was Mike’s beverage of choice at the Skup, I figure this would be a good way to shoot their rings.   The Coors brewing company may want to hire me to shoot their advertising photographs now!

Connection #2…..the minister who performed Mike & Stacie’s ceremony was recently married at First United Methodist Church in Evanston which is where my wife Amy and I were married.  Beth recently finished her internship at FUMC, and was also recently married at FUMC.  In fact several of her wedding photos were on display in the brides room downstairs.  And here’s the real kicker….unknown to me, through her internship at FUMC, she became friends with my sister who’s’ getting married at FUMC next weekend, and was heading off to one of my sister’s bridal showers on Sunday!  Small world.

IMG 4507 Chicago Wedding Photography Stacie and Mike“And it gives me great pleasure to introduce……Mr. and Mrs. Melissa and Stacie…..er, ooops, Mike and Stacie…..”  Seriously, she introduced “Mike” as “Mellisa,” but everyone had a good laugh and Mike was a good sport about it!.
